Dabei passieren hier so einige Dinge ganz unvorhersehbar.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.Good books about mental illnesses are as rare as they are important. This middle school / young adult novel about a boy with agoraphobia and a girl’s attempt to “fix†him is such a good book. The strongest point of the book was the description of Solomon’s mental state and thought process. He had accepted the agoraphobia as part of himself, but at the same time, it sometimes stood in the way of things he wanted. Big issues were addressed, such as the belief of being able to fix people with mental illness through love / friendship and amateure attempts at therapy. But even small language details reflected a positive and accepting view on mental illnesses. For example, “… if he could leave the house.†- “could†(like he is bound to a wheelchair and there is no ramp), not “would†(like a sulking teenager refusing to come out of their room). That is something I greatly appreciated and think sends an important message to the readership: mental illness is not a choice, nor a phase, nor an act of rebellion. I also loved that when Solomon does step outside, it was his moment and his alone: no-one urging him, pushing him or luring him. Just his decision. While Solomon was a great and well-written character, I had massive problems with Lisa. She was the antagonist of the novel, in a way. Weirdly ambitious, manipulative and naively self-centered, she does not only make Solomon her project to fix in order to get into her dream college, she also reads her boyfriends emails and is “not ready to accept that†when he falls out of love with her. In the end, her change of heart and development were appreciated, even though I could not fully understand them because it was not described in detail. Much like Lisa, Solomon’s parents also seem to be there mostly for decoration: they passively have accepted their son living in the house for three years and seem to do nothing against it at all.The cast of characters was overall very limited, and the book kept relatively simple in terms of setting, plot lines and time. But that does not matter, because the focus was on the mental illness and how to deal with it - both as the person having it and as an outsider trying to help. Therefore, older readers (teachers, parents) might find a couple of things to criticize from a literary point of view, but the intended audience surely will thoroughly enjoy this novel.
