Gustavo Mercado is an independent filmmaker with over a decade of experience producing, writing, editing, directing, and shooting motion pictures on film and high-definition video. His films have been featured in national and international film festivals, and one of his short films, Sensitive (2002), won the grand prize in the Showtime Latino Filmmaker Showcase. As a Professor in Hunter College's Film & Media Studies Department in New York City, Mercado teaches editing, screenwriting, film production, and cinematography.

Der einzige Nachteil, der aber trotzdem kein Stern kostete, ist die Sprache. Man muss kein Englischprofessor sein um es zu verstehen, trotzdem schade, dass das Buch nicht auch in Deutsch erhältlich ist.Dennoch, ein Schatz in meiner Bibliothek der Filmemacher. Ich studiere Film und bemerke, wie meine Kollegen und ich uns viel zu sehr an die Norm versteifen. Aber gerade die Individualität des Gestalters macht aus einen guten einen genialen Künstler. "The Flimmaker's eye" erklärt und begleitet einen. Ein Selbstfindungsbuch ? Vielleicht. Ich weiß jetzt, auf was ich achten und was ich mit diversen Einstellung wirklich bewirken kann. Somit kann ich meine Geschichten besser verbildern und arbeite bewusst.Ein Top-Buch !!
In der Bestellung waren drei Buecher zum Filmen. Unter anderem auch Brown's Cinematography. Mercado's Buch überzeugt von Anfang an: schöne Verarbeitung, schön in der Hand liegend, erfrischend farblich gestaltet. Er erklärt die technische Seite des Filmens an Filmen aus dem angelsächsischen und asiatischen Raum.
I do recommend this book; excellent source of information, well presented, well written. You see movies with another eye once you have started reading this book. This was a gift for someone who is passionate about movie-making.

Dieses Buch ist ein wunderbarer 'Basic Guide' über Filmsprache und Bildkomposition. Die ersten rund 30 Seiten befassen sich mit grundlegenden Prinzipien und technischen Fragen. Angefangen von der 'Rule of Thirds' (Drittel-Regel/Goldener Schnitt) und '180° Rule' (180-Grad-Regel/Achssprung), über Informationen zu Optiken und Aufnahmeformaten bis hin zu Erläuterungen über 'Image Systems'.Der restliche, weit aus größere, Teil beschäftigt sich dann ausschließlich mit Einstellungsgrößen und -arten. Jedem 'Shot' werden ein paar Seiten gewidmet, die immer glech gegliedert und klar strukturiert sind. Einer allgemeinen Beschreibung der jeweiligen Einstellung, samt passendem Beispielbild, folgt eine analytische Doppelseite nach dem Motto 'Why it works'. Daran schließen technische Überlegungen zu Objektiven, Material und Licht an. Beendet wird jedes dieser Kapitel mit Vorschlägen und Beispielen, wie man die soeben erklärten Regeln auch brechen kann und darf. Gerade diese 'Breaking the Rules'-Seiten machen meiner Meinung nach den besonderen Reiz dieses Buches aus – auch wenn sie manchmal ein bisschen an den Haaren herbeigezogen wirken, denn nicht jede Einstellung eignet sich zum 'Regelbrechen' gleich gut wie manch andere. Aber selbst hier findet der Autor Wege, dem Leser zumindest Ideen mitzugeben, ein bisschen über 'starres Regelwerk' hinauszudenken.Gustavo Mercado ist ein Cineast und Enthusiast, das merkt man an der Art wie und was er schreibt. Sein Stil ist nicht oberlehrerhaft, er nutzt klare und einfache Worte und Beispiele, um sein Wissen zu vermitteln. Alle Filmreferenzen sind hauptsächlich in der jüngeren Geschichte angesiedelt, dabei keineswegs nur auf Hollywoodfilme beschränkt, sondern über die ganze Welt verteilt. Die im Buch abgedruckten Beispielbilder sind nicht nur qualitativ hochwertig, sondern auch besonders sorgfältig und treffend gewählt. Man versteht sofort, was der Autor erklären möchte und lernt, einen tieferen Blick auf Filme und deren Bilder zu werfen.Empfehlen kann ich dieses Buch jedem, der sich für Filmsprache und Bildkomposition interessiert. Nicht unbedingt (nur) für Laien, sondern gerade den engagierten Independentfilmer und Filmstudenten, der seinen Blick schärfen und Techniken zum Geschichtenerzählen lernen und vertiefen möchte.Auch wenn man meint, die Grundlagen schon intus zu haben – wenn man weiß was ein Close Up, eine Halbtotale oder eine Dollyfahrt ist – so eröffnet dieses Buch trotzdem neue Sichtweisen. Ein Filmbild enthält eben weit mehr, als nur das abzubildende Objekt. Die Art und Weise wie es in Szene gesetzt ist, wie der Bildausschnitt, das Licht, die Brennweite, etc. gewählt sind, entscheidet maßgeblich darüber, ob der Versuch des Filmemachers, dem Zuschauer seine Idee von der Geschichte zu vermitteln, von Erfolg gekrönt ist oder nicht.Lesern, die (wie ich) nicht oft englische Bücher lesen, kann ich sagen, dass dieses Buch durchwegs verständlich ist. Es kann aber sicher nicht schaden, ein gewisses Vorwissen mitzubringen. Begriffe wie Primes, Aspect Ratio, Depth of Field o.ä. werden zwar extra erklärt, aber wenn sie einem schon vorher geläufig waren, liest es sich einfach flüssiger, meine ich.
The book teaches in well illustrated examples from hollywood movies how to film meaningful scenes, that help you to tell a story. Various camera setups / shots are discussed, with attention to every detail in the frame and what it tells the audience. The rules of a good medium shot, long shot, etc. and what you achieve by using this shot. "breaking the rules" refers to examples of violating these rules, in order to achieve a certain effect in the audience. But not as an end in itself, rather as a means of story telling. I found this book very useful and I can recommend it to everyone who wants to film anything. You become conscious of the question: If I use this shot, what effect will it have on the viewers?
Ich habe dieses Buch für unsere Uni-Bibliothek bestellt und finde es sehr hilfreich, wenn man die Grundlagen der Filmsprache an Studierende vermitteln will. Die Erklärungen sind klar und es werden immer Beispiele im Detail besprochen. Das Buch richtet sich in erster Linie an Filmstudenten und angehende Regisseure und mag für den interessierten Filmfan etwas zu detailliert sein. Der große Vorteil ist, dass Mercado auf eine simple Funktionszuweisung verzichtet (wie man sie in Filmbüchern für die Schule oft findet). Er stellt die Einstellungen detailliert in unterschiedlichen Kontexten vor und spricht somit auch verschiedene Bedeutungspotentiale an.Fazit: eine klare Kauf- und Leseempfehlung, besonders wenn man Film im tertiären Bildungssektor unterrichtet.
